A Guide to Dog Training teaches viewers how to train a dog with minimal owner frustration. The program offers alternatives to spanking with a rolled-up newspaper to discourage toilet bowl lapping, and better options than shrieking when a dog just won't play nice. An easy-to-follow program, the video demonstrates how to train dogs in a loving, humane manner, and promises to achieve great results with fewer headaches. ~ Betsy Boyd, Rovi Woof! Woof!! Uncle Matty's Guide to Dog Training Famous dog-lover and trainer Uncle Matty (aka Matthew Margolies) has earned the limelight by training dogs of celebrities and making expert appearances on network television. Known for being able to convert a dog to being responsive, sometimes in mere minutes, Uncle Matty's skills are famous in their own rite. His "love, praise, affection" technique is the base of all he has accomplished. In this video, he demonstrates the need to get to the real root of problems, and the importance of training with love and support rather than through punishment. He covers subjects from choosing a puppy and making the dog at ease in your home to obedience and behavior problem solving, all with a loving approach. Dog Eat Dog - $12.99 A fortune in cash is the bait that draws some would-be criminals into a feeding frenzy in this offbeat but stylish crime drama. Lylle Corbett (Cameron Mitchell) and his girlfriend, Darlene (Jayne Mansfield), have just pulled off the heist of a lifetime, stealing one million dollars in American currency as it's being transported from Europe back to the United States. Hiding out in a small, run-down hotel on the Mediterranean coast, Lylle and Darlene plan to hire a boat and make their way back to the States, where they can start spending some of their loot. However, Darlene's abundance of enthusiasm and lack of common sense cause Livio Morelli (Aldo Camarda), the manager of the hotel, to suspect that she and Lylle are responsible for the robbery that's been all over the news. Livio quickly hatches a plan to steal the fortune from Lylle and cover his tracks, but Livio's hardly the only one looking for the loot, with his spinster sister, Sandra (Dody Heath), greedy butler Dolph (Ivor Salter), and eccentric heiress Madame Benoit (Isa Miranda) all conniving to get their hands on the cash. Dog Eat Dog (aka La Morte Vestita di Dollar) was released in the United Kingdom as When Strangers Meet, the title of the novel that was the basis for its screenplay. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Nello's most deeply felt ambition is to follow in the footsteps of the greatest Flemish artists but his grandfather has little faith in Nello's ability to make a living with brush and canvas. Inevitably, Daas passes away and Nello ekes out a living as they always did, accompanied by his cart dog. One day Nello and his canine friend meet Piet (Theodore Bikel), a reclusive artist whose muse has not been constant of late. The combination of young boy, talented artist, and loyal canine then begins to exert its own chemistry, to everyone's benefit. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi |

White Dog - Widescreen $21.99 A little-seen film, suppressed by Paramount studio executives and never released theatrically in the U.S., this drama is a powerful saga about racism. Julie Sawyer (Kristy McNichol) hits a handsome white dog with her car one night and then nurses it back to health. One day, the theretofore mild-mannered dog saves her life by viciously attacking and killing a rapist who breaks into her home. Lucy discovers that the dog has been trained to attack black skin. She consults an animal trainer, Carruthers (Burl Ives), who urges her to have the dog exterminated. But a maverick black trainer, Keys (Paul Winfield), who has tried before to break the training of such dogs but never succeeded, steps in. Director Sam Fuller had made other controversial films, but this one frightened studio executives, who deep-sixed it. It was hailed by critics when it was released in Europe. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi |

Dog in the Sand $17.99 Full performer name: Frank Black and the Catholics (Rock).Frank Black And The Catholics: Frank Black (vocals, guitar); David McCaffrey (vocals, bass); Dave Philips (acoustic & electric guitars); Rich Gilbert (electric & pedal steel guitars); Joey Santiago (guitar); Eric Drew Feldman (piano); Scott Boutier (drums); Nick Vincent (percussion).Recorded at Sound City Studios, Los Angeles, California between March 25 & April 3, 2000.On 2001's DOG IN THE SAND, former Pixies frontman Frank Black (AKA Black Francis, born Charles Thompson) seems to have come to terms with his old band's shadow constantly looming overhead. In fact, the album, co-billed to his longtime ensemble the Catholics, even features contributions by Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago and that group's part-time pianist, Eric Drew Feldman. The result, though, is not a stab at recreating SURFER ROSA or DOOLITTLE. Rather, it's an assured and relatively straightforward rock record that occasionally indulges in country leanings, most notably on the twangy narrative "St. Francis Dam Disaster" and the sauntering "Llano del Rio." Of course, Black's penchant for guitar rockers ("Robert Onion") and quirky songs of sexuality ("Hermaphroditos") also rears its head, revealing that certain parts of his aesthetic remain unchanged, regardless of his nom de plume. Standing out as one of Black's finest solo outings, DOG IN THE SAND also sowed the seeds of the Pixies' 2004 reunion, making it a particularly notable release. |

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai - $8.99 A surreal crime drama told as only Jim Jarmusch could, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai stars Forest Whitaker as Ghost Dog, a hit man living in an unidentified but run-down city in what license plates call "The Industrialized State." Known for his gift of being able to come and go without people noticing him, Ghost Dog is a self-taught samurai who is obsessed with order and his strict personal moral code, drawn from the philosophies of the Japanese warriors. As every samurai needs a leader to whom he swears loyalty, Ghost Dog has devoted himself the service of Louie (John Tormey), a low-level crime boss who once saved his life. When Louie's superiors decide he must be executed, Ghost Dog leaps into action, methodically wiping out his many enemies. Along with a dizzying series of stylized shoot-outs, Ghost Dog also features carrier pigeons, characters who read Rashomon, a French-speaking ice cream man, and a score by RZA from the top-selling hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan, who have their own well-documented obsession with Asian culture. Ghost Dog was screened in competition at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Down and Out in Beverly Hills - $8.99 Down and Out in Beverly Hills is an updated remake of the 1932 Jean Renoir film Boudu Saved From Drowning. Philandering businessman Dave Whiteman (Richard Dreyfuss) rescues scraggly tramp Jerry Baskin (Nick Nolte) from drowning himself in Dave's swimming pool. Much against his will, Jerry is invited to enjoy the hospitality of Dave, his social-climbing wife, Barbara (Bette Midler), and their sexually ambivalent son, Max (Evan Richards). The hapless hobo bonds only with the family dog, Matisse, which fascinates Barbara to the point that she's willing to share her bed (and a few other things) with him. Dave is twice cuckolded when Jerry makes out with the maid (Elizabeth Pe?a), with whom he has been carrying on a torrid -- and noisy -- affair. He plans to wreak revenge on the tramp, but several plot twists result in Dave and Jerry becoming bosom companions. Little Richard appears as the family's easily irritated next-door neighbor. Down and Out in Beverly Hills was the R-rated film that compelled Disney to create its adult-oriented Touchstone Films division. The property was later cleaned up for TV consumption and converted into a short-lived Fox-network sitcom. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

This film stirred up a lot of controversy when it first came out as the distributors exhibited remarkably bad judgment by releasing it two weeks after the Oklahoma City bombing of a Federal building that resulted in the death of close to two hundred innocent people, some of them small children. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi |

Dog House Music [LP] $16.98 Yes, they really do still make albums like this in the 21st century. Steve Wold, otherwise known as Seasick Steve, released his second album, Dog House Music in 2007, his first purely solo effort; he had previously released an album entitled Cheap several years earlier for which he shared the credit with Swedish band the Level Devils. Dog House Music is like a really old John Lee Hooker or Muddy Waters album, or maybe something even less commercial as Steve strums his guitar and sings along, his voice sounding drowned in bourbon, and occasionally a song such as "Fallen off a Rock" crashes to life, literally, with the guitar no longer picking out a sorrowful blues lick but strumming wildly and the drums smashing away in the foreground played by two members of his family, HJ Wold and PM Wold. Apart from that however, the entire album is played by Steve, recorded in what sounded like one take, when he might have been sitting in a leaky shack by the Mississippi, almost every track given a short introduction almost as if to explain to a personal audience what the forthcoming song is about and why it is important. The album begins with the very short (just over one minute) track, "Yellow Dog" which sounds like it was been recorded at the bottom of a well, the acoustics are so terrible. When the final track, "I'm Gone," finishes, there is a small gap which is followed by Steve reciting a real shaggy dog story, over five minutes long, no music, just Steve rambling about being arrested and after spending six months in jail, looking for his runaway dog; this eventually runs into another sad blues song (about a dog). Not sure why anybody would want to listen to this story more than once. Even the album cover looks like it was designed and drawn by a six-year-old, but that simply adds to the unpolished and underproduced nature of the work, which is a credit, not a fault. ~ Sharon Mawer |

Dog Eat Dog - Widescreen Subtitle $14.99 Voodoo and greed serve as the catalysts for a wild ride through the brutal Columbian underworld in director/co-screenwriter Carlos Moreno's entry into the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. El Orej?n may be one of the most notorious crime bosses in Columbia, yet despite his violent reputation, the agoraphobic don rarely ventures outside of his luxury high-rise apartment -- instead opting to keep tabs on the streets via the many telescopes that line his windowed walls. After his godson William is brutally gunned down, a vengeful El Orej?n implores voodoo priestess Iris to put a hex on the triggerman. At the exact same time, miles away, small-town thug Victor sets out to collect some missing money from two scheming twins. When Victor decides to skirt the laws of the street and keep the cash for himself, the disastrous chain reaction caused by his decision gains so much momentum that it may be impossible to stop. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

A Grand Day Out - Fullscreen $8.99 It's another bank holiday in northern England, and eccentric inventor Wallace and his faithful dog, Gromit, are sitting around the house with nothing to do. While poring over stacks of travel magazines, Wallace suggests that the pair break for a hot cup of tea and some cheese. When he discovers that there's no cheese to be found anywhere in the house, he hits upon an ideal place for a picnic: "Everybody knows the moon's made of cheese." With Gromit's help, he immediately starts construction on a rocket ship, and before long the two are walking on (and tasting) the lunar surface. In his third film with Kurosawa, Toshiro Mifune plays young police detective Murakami. One summer day on a crowded bus in Tokyo, his gun is stolen by a pickpocket. Rather than face the shame of reporting his gun missing, he chooses to go out and find it himself (there were not many weapons on the streets of Tokyo immediately following WWII). While trying to locate the gun, he discovers an entire criminal underworld. He is eventually helped on his journey by superior officer Sato (Takashi Shimura), who seems to suggest that the young detective is indulging in his own criminal desires. The search becomes even more desperate when Murakami finds out that his gun has been used in several crimes, including murder. Jack the Dog - Widescreen $14.99 One man's insatiable appetite for sex begins upending his life in this biting independent comedy. Jack (Nestor Carbonell) is a photographer known to his friends as "Jack the Dog," thanks to his compulsive womanizing; Jack seems incapable of staying with one partner for long before he finds himself attracted to someone else, and given his good looks and easy charm, Jack doesn't have much trouble convincing the women he meets to spend the night with him. Deep inside, Jack wants to change, and he tries to put himself on the straight and narrow by marrying Faith (Barbara Williams). Jack and Faith soon have a son, Sam (Andrew J. Ferchland), whom Jack dotes upon, but Faith turns out to be a poor advertisement for long-term monogamy; she's not especially warm or forgiving, and she's started to show her age, which only intensifies Jack's taste for younger women. Jack soon slides into chronic infidelity, and Faith leaves him, relocating to London and leaving Sam behind. This is good news as far as Jack's concerned, but as he tries to watch over his son, while also seducing an endless parade of beautiful women, Jack finds himself increasingly puzzled by the opposite sex, and he wonders if he might have a problem he hasn't learned to deal with. Jack the Dog received its world premiere at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Rainy Dog - Dolby $19.99 Takashi Miike directs this brooding, hard-boiled gangster drama set in monsoon-soaked Taiwan. Yuji (played by Miike regular Sho Aikawa) ekes out an existence working as a Japanese hit man for a gang in Taipei. A laconic character with a lizard-like gaze, he seems to have little use for other people -- even for his unbalanced godfather who calls him his son. All he is interested in is the money. His life takes a sudden change when a former lover appears at his doorstep, drops off a boy (He Jianxian) she claims is his, and beats a hasty retreat. With the child in tow, Yuji carries out his business -- shooting a mobster from a rival gang as he eats dinner with his family. After receiving his fee, he takes home a comely young hooker named Lily (Chen Xianmei). While they are getting to know one another, the boy sleeps on a piece of cardboard in the rain, snuggling up to a stray dog. Amused at the kid's tenacity, Yuji eventually throws the boy a towel. Later, Yuji stumbles upon a briefcase full of money while taking out a rival godfather. With the cash in hand, he plots to take Lily and the boy someplace better. In the meantime, the trio flees to an isolated beach in central Taiwan, hoping to escape the bloodthirsty gangster on their tail. Waiting for the interminable rain to cease, they hold up in a World War II-era pillbox. Something resembling family develops between the three. When the rain stops, they are forced to continue their escape. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi |

Alpha Dog - Widescreen $9.99 A drug dealer moves on to bigger crimes in an effort to settle a score with disastrous results in this drama inspired by actual events. Though barely out of his teens, Johnny Truelove (Emile Hirsch) has already built a lucrative career for himself selling drugs -- he has his own home, a luxury car, and posse of friends who do double duty as his crew, including Elvis (Shawn Hatosy), Frankie (Justin Timberlake), and Tiko (Fernando Vargas). While life at Johnny's house is usually a constant party interrupted by occasional dope deals, Johnny has lost all of his patience with Jake Mazursky (Ben Foster), a regular customer who has run up a large tab that he can't pay. Determined to clear Jake's account, Johnny and his boys plan to kidnap Jake and hold him for ransom, but when they happen upon his 15-year-old stepbrother, Zack (Anton Yelchin), they impulsively decide to take the youngster instead. Jake's father, Butch (David Thornton), and his stepmother, Olivia (Sharon Stone), are already furious with their junkie son when they learn about Zack's disappearance, and aren't sure what they should do. Meanwhile at Johnny's place, Frankie takes a liking to young Zack, who already admires his brother's high-flying lifestyle, and introduces the kid to the joys of grown-up partying, which he takes to with dangerous zeal. Also featuring Bruce Willis as Johnny's father, Alpha Dog was based on the real-life story of Jesse James Hollywood, who at the age of 21 became one of the youngest people to ever appear on the FBI's "Most Wanted" list. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
